November 28th, 2013 – Vienna, Austria – AIMS International, a preeminent global Executive Search and Talent Management organization, has launched the 8th issue of its Business Climate indicator. The ABCA delivers a global insight into the executive search business.

This analysis of the Executive Search Market surveys past, present and expected business conditions in 7 major business segments. It approaches the last 4 months and forecasts the next 4 months on the basis of interviews with AIMS International partners and consultants in 44 countries. The first ABCA was published in Q2 2011.

“Every issue of the ABCA delivers useful information for any business leader. AIMS International covers the whole world and as trends in Executive Search firms are very early signs of changes – good or bad, the ABCA analysis provides concise information about these trends. It is a good indicator of where the future is heading”, says Daniel Ekberg, President of AIMS International.

The ABCA Q3 2013 shows the following significant results:

1. 34% (Δ -2%) of the AIMS International partners and consultants evaluate the current state of business locally as good, 50% (Δ +1%) as middle and 16% (Δ +1%) as bad.
This shows there have been small changes to the evaluation of the business situation in the local markets which is a small mark for a stabilization of the local economies which had been visible already in the Q2 2013 ABCA.
Solely evaluating the situation in the EMEA Region, the local business situation is worse as only 26% evaluate the situation as good.

2. Allowing multiple answers, significant differences in the development of important business segments during the last 12 months have become obvious: business in Industrial, Engineering and Logistics, as well as the Automotive, the Financial Services, the IT&T and the Energy segment show a decrease of -8% as an average.
Only the two business sectors FMCG, Retail and Luxury goods, and Pharmaceuticals, Health Care and Life Science are relatively stable in comparison to the ABCA in 2013 Q2.

3. Following the answers to the questions about revenue development in the last 4 months, stabilization has taken place. There is a shift from companies with decreasing revenues to stable and increasing revenues (Δ +10%). However, global markets in the 7 industry segments are still in rough waters but trending upwards.
Solely evaluating the situation in the EMEA Region is worse, as 19% evaluate the turnover as decreasing in this region. How is the revenue development in the last 4 months?

4. The strongest market for Executive Search in EMEA seems to be Finland, in the AMERICAS Canada, Chile and the US. In APAC the business is stable.

5. Only 50% (Δ -8%) of the interviewees evaluate the number of current direct search projects in their countries as large or sufficient, the 50% (Δ +8%) as not enough. Alarming is that only 7% of the companies evaluate the number of direct search projects in their markets as large. How is the number of current direct search projects?

6. As for the forecast for the next 4 months (2013 Q4), 86% (Δ -3%) expect the business to be stable or better, 14% (Δ +3%) as worse. The significant increase of interviewees with a positive business expectation (Δ +10%) is a signal of tendencies toward better markets. How is the forecast for the next 4 months?

The overall outlook for Q4, 2013 is more promising than in 2013 Q1 and Q2.

On September 26th, this interesting round-table conference organized by the Alumni Association of IE Business School took place with first-class international speakers. The event was organized by the alumni Luis Truchado, EuroGalenus Executive Search (AIMS International Spain), and Ignacio Tuduri, BUM at Abbvie. Ángel Fernández, President MSD-Spain explained that competition to identify new molecules for incurable diseases has increased substantially and reduced the return on investment which is currently negative. The key now is to improve access to market. In his opinion, the future global market lies in emerging markets, while Europe is falling behind. MSD has always been strong on R&D resulting in 17% of sales, a relevant percentage among the companies of the same sector, and even more if compared to other sectors. ‘We must try to be first in class or best in class’. ‘At MSD we focus on innovation, where patient comes first’, Angel Fernández stated. Next, Luigi Antoniazzi, General Manager BAXTER-Spain, offered data about the evolution of business models and structures over time. Baxter is a well-diversified company, with relevant presence in the areas of haemophilia, dialysis, parenteral nutrition, fluid therapy, biosurgery and vaccines. Half of the products researched and developed do not match economic expectations. ‘Besides the innovation, we invest in added-value services to offer personalized services that improve patients’ quality of life and that ease the transfer from hospital to home care’, he added. Finally, Ricardo Brage, VP Sanofi Pasteur MSD-Spain, a joint-venture since 1994. Both mother companies are devoted to R&D and manufacturing, so their portfolio is vast, covering 20 diseases with 25 vaccines and protecting 390 million people in Europe only. Production cycles for vaccines are very long: from tender until supply, timelines are very tight. Ricardo underlined ‘the success of vaccines for diseases such as smallpox, polio or measles’, and commented that ‘in Spain the public market has decreased almost by half’. During this participative round-table conference, questions were about the limitations of public financing, cutbacks and lack of sensitivity to industrial investment and R&D in the sector. Afterwards, guests were served a light cocktail, courtesy of AIMS-Spain Executive Search, as a chance for talking in a more casual way and for in-person networking.

The intention of this column is to interview a newly appointed CEO or high profile “C” position, from the line of sight of an Executive Search Consultant and share with the readers insights of the person, his/her style and among other things, the reasons for him/her to get a new job.
The forth interview was led with Rizal Bragagnini, the CEO of Quimica Suiza

About Rizal Bragagnini:

Current position: CEO, Quimica Suiza (Quicorp)

Previous Position: CEO, San Fernando

Age: 48 years

Marital status: Married, two children

Hobby / Sport: Numismatics. Basketball. Reading novels, business books and books about personal improvement

Education: Catholic University of Peru, Industrial Engineer

Interview:

Rizal Bragagnini: “I see the organigram reversed: the CEO is at the service of the others”

Does your appointment as CEO of Quimica Suiza mark continuity or a change based on your educational background and experience?

It is rather a summary of everything I’ve done so far. Quimica Suiza covers a wide spectrum in the health sector, mass consumption, serves the industrial market and is developing in retail. I see the opportunity to do this all in Quicorp.

And what does “do everything” mean for a CEO, especially for your direct reports and the organization as a whole?

I think the CEO is at the service of the others and not vice versa, I see the organization inverted. The CEO must be at the base and work for his team which finally enables the client, which is who pays our salaries, to be completely satisfied.

So what do you think what would the people respond who have worked with you if I asked them how you are and what did Rizal Bragagnini expect from you when he managed you?

They would say that I let them the freedom to work, I gave them the support they needed to succeed and I worked for them and with them. In return I waited and I always await commitment, loyalty and passion.

Do you have a recipe, a basic principle that you apply in your day-by-day management?

The three basic ingredients in my recipe are:
Strategy, people and operations.
I have to understand the business, have to know where we are going in the short, medium and long term; where we play and how we will win. As for talent, an adequate organizational structure is key, and in operations, we strive for excellence with the best processes, tools and controls.

Do you forgive mistakes? What do you not tolerate?

Yes, but always ask to “fail fast and cheap” and then learn. What I cannot stand is the lie.

You have been trained in a large corporation like Procter & Gamble and then worked in family businesses. This should have taught you new things. What do you especially remember?

I learned that in family businesses culture forces us to be more flexible because entrepreneurship is much appreciated typically at the beginning. We must be near the shareholders to understand the essence of the company and must take care of the “how” as much as the “what”.

In your previous experience, do you remember anything that surprised you, or was there any
operational or management factor that was not on your horizon?

I remember the incredible thrust of the Peruvian women at Unique, expressed among the direct sales directors. I bear witness of that great effort which was something really amazing, something that surprised me pleasantly.

Do you admire someone special, a mentor to inspire you in your role as CEO?

Two. Steve Jobs was an inspiration for his vision of the future, saying that “the best way to predict the future is to create it”.
As a manager, I admire Phil Jackson, the former coach of the L.A. Lakers and the Chicago Bulls, for its ability to handle geniuses and letting them grow, but in a structured way, within a strategy created by him, the “triangle offense”. That is a concept that has allowed me to surround myself with people who are smarter than me and serve them to achieve the expected results.
